Match Day Awards Explained

If you read the match reports you will see a section at the end detailing the awards given after every match.   This page explains how to win them!

After each match, as is traditional in village cricket the weary participants repair to the local hostelry to celebrate wins or commiserate defeats.  Stories are told and heroic deeds relived.  It has become a Flyford tradition that there are a number of awards made after any game, no monetary value, just the fun of recognition:

MAN OF THE MATCH

This one is self explanatory, it may be batting, fielding, bowling or just all round effort but as in all categories nominations are made and a democratic vote is taken among all those present.

TIT

While perhaps named in a less politically correct era, this remains one of the best loved and each week hotly debated awards.  It given essentially for doing something that makes you look a tit!  I could be a spectacular dive for a catch that you had no chance of getting, losing balance and collapsing on your stumps, running out your partner, in fact any number of village level stupidities.  Interestingly there is never a shortage of candidiates!

CHAMPAGNE MOMENT

Shamelessly stolen from the BBC's much loved Test Match Special, the Champagne Moment looks to recognise a moment of sheer brilliance in the game.  It may be a spectacular catch or even taking a wicket in a 'proper' cricket style (as opposed to 'village').  Whatever it is it is a recognition that no matter what the result there are always moments worthy of nomination!

THANKS FOR COMING

At village level not everyone gets an equal share of the game, it could be that you turn up, field at Cow Corner and no opposition batsman hits it down there.  Then the skipper wanting to include you puts you down to bat at number three and the openers knock off the required runs without the loss of a wicket (I know not likely but it can happen).  Someone unfortunate enough to suffer this fate does then deserve the recognition for giving up their time of the 'Thanks for coming' award.

THE GOLDEN DUCK

If anyone is unfortunate enough not to trouble the scorers and face that long walk back without a run to their name there is the prospect of the award of a golden duck trophy to be looked forward to after the game.  This award is notably given for the Golden variety of Duck but also the common or garden failure to register a run innings.
